At the end of the session you have experienced:

  1. The impact of different solutions on Throughput Time and the amount of Work-in-Process;
  2. where to look for bottlenecks after every improvement step;
  3. which communication skills necessary during improvement processes.

About the company

You will operate a company called “Electric Motor Company”. ”Electric motor company” has achieved a strong market position, because the company produces very variable motors with a variety of modular options (270 possible combinations). Competition in this market segment increases strongly. Customers are increasingly critical. Not only critical concerning the price, but also concerning delivery time, delivery moment reliability and order completeness.
All participants in this simulation will get a role: Order entry employee, product configurator, production planner, stockroom attendant, production operators, employee of shipping department, and credit collection employee.
Our company has three successive production departments, which are functional oriented:

  • Production department 1: Housing department.
  • Production department 2: Rotor mounting.
  • Production department 3: Customizing.

About the simulation

The simulation has three rounds. The routing of an order for the first round is described in the procedures.

First round

During the first round the participants play the game according to the rules given. Production is totally customer order driven.
After the first round we will fill in a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
Then the participants will prepare proposals to improve the overall performance. The focus of these improvements is on simplifying administration. The physical flow of goods may not yet be changed.

Second round

After consensus about the paperwork improvement proposals, we will play the second round. The set of KPI’s will be filled in again. The performances will be evaluated with the group. In most cases already in the second round important improvements are being achieved. Work in Process will decrease, and Throughput Times will accelerate.

Third round

After the second round the participants will again propose improvements. The physical flow of goods may be changed if necessary.
The KPI’s will be compared to the first two periods.
The participants have experienced how their contributions have led to large improvements.
Note: This simulation has been used twice during the APICS International Conferences.

”We used the EMC simulation during the kick-off of our lean program. I was surprised by the improvements we achieved during our 4 hour session.”
Bob van Dalen, lean program manager.

”The Electric Motor Company was an eye opener for me. I am working in a traditional industry, and we did not do experiments like this in our company. The simulation showed me that with the right focus on waste reduction and performance indicators we, as a team, could improve the throughput time, and the flexibility of the (simulation) plant. I am looking forward to apply this in my own company.”
Pieter de Vries, production planner.
